A good friend reached out to me requesting help styling a tall bookshelf in her apartment. I thought it would be fun to take you through the process!

Current Space

A true blank slate—the bookshelf sits in a central, shared space, visible from both the kitchen and living room, making it important that the elements complement the existing design and feel cohesive from every angle.

The Inspiration

Before styling, it’s important to gather inspiration—and then take a moment to understand why certain images resonate.

What makes the spaces below work?

  • Balance: The goal is to distribute weight evenly by mixing heights and shapes so no single shelf feels heavier than another. Vary objects vertically and horizontally, layer decorative pieces with functional ones, and leave intentional negative space to let each item breathe.

  • Varied texture: A thoughtful mix of wood tones, stone, metal, art, ceramics, and books adds depth and interest.

  • Collected, not curated: The spaces feel personal and layered. Pair foundational pieces like simple vases, bowls, and coffee table books with items that hold meaning—antique finds, artwork you love, or family heirlooms.
